Formula E HKT Hong Kong ePrix set to electrify Hong Kong

Inaugural event to share excitement, entertainment & innovation of Formula E with all of Hong Kong

HONG KONG, 31 May 2016 – Formula Electric Racing Hong Kong today announced the latest event details surrounding the ground-breaking FIA Formula E HKT Hong Kong ePrix (8-9 October).

This first-of-its-kind international event on the Central Harbourfront will be the biggest motorsport event ever held in Hong Kong, weaving its way through an urban circuit approximately two kilometres in length, featuring long straights, hairpin bends, and stunning views of the harbour and Hong Kong’s iconic skyline.

Grandstands erected along the track’s 555-metre main straight at Lung Wo Road, Tamar Park and The Hong Kong Observation Wheel offer unrivalled views of the world’s newest – and arguably most iconic – motorsport circuit, while a specially established eVillage at Lung Wo Road provides a home for the organizers’ planned entertainment festival that will make the ePrix a major addition to Hong Kong’s events calendar. Total capacity for the three grandstands will exceed 6,000 seats, with organizers targeting a total event capacity of 30,000.

“Formula E is shaping the future of sports events, where entertainment and motorsport meet to create the ultimate event experience,” said Mr Alan Fang, Chief Executive Officer of Formula Electric Racing Hong Kong at today’s press conference.

Underpinning this unique confluence of world-class sport, entertainment and innovation are Formula E’s three core values of Energy, Environment and Entertainment.

eVillage

To complement the world-class motorsport on the track, a specially erected eVillage will help to share the excitement of the Hong Kong ePrix with the wider community.

Over the race weekend the eVillage will feature attractions and entertainment with performances on a series of mini-stages, children’s zones and an array of game booths and activities, including Formula E racing simulator competitions – putting both fans and families at the heart of the action.

In keeping with the ePrix’s emphasis on promoting sustainability, the eVillage will include interactive displays on the latest sustainable energy technologies as well as displays of new electric cars from some of the world’s premier marques.

Demonstrating the wide-ranging support for the event, today’s press conference was attended by Mr Gregory So, the Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development (SCED) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region; Mr Alejandro Agag, Chief Executive Officer of Formula E Holdings; Mr Alex Arena, Group Managing Director of HKT, title sponsor of the event; Mr Lawrence Yu, President of the Hong Kong Automobile Association, sanctioning body of the HKT Hong Kong ePrix; and Mr Alan Fang of Formula Electric Racing (Hong Kong).

Speaking at today’s press conference, the SCED, Mr So said, “The government fully supports the introduction of the FIA Formula E Championship to Hong Kong this year. Not only will this world-class novel car race become a Hong Kong people’s event, it will showcase our splendid skyline and harbour view to the world, hence enriching the tourism appeal of Hong Kong and reinforcing our position as an events capital of Asia. We are delighted to learn that the organizer and the tourism trade have developed tourist packages for our visitors to enjoy the race, which will give an impetus to our tourism development.”

Mr Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E Holdings said, “The Hong Kong ePrix has the potential to be one of Formula E’s premier events. The circuit is located right in the heart of the city, winding its way around some of the most iconic landmarks. We are looking forward to welcoming a passionate and enthusiastic crowd to witness the inaugural running of Formula E in Hong Kong, none of which would have been possible without the tremendous help and support of the government and city authorities.”

Mr Alex Arena, Group Managing Director of HKT, said, “HKT and Formula E share a common belief in pursuing innovation, leadership, sustainability and speed. We see this partnership as a great opportunity to demonstrate our leading expertise in connectivity and technology during the event.”

Also joining in today’s excitement were Team Aguri driver Ma Qing Hua, the only Chinese driver on the grid, and one of Hong Kong’s most iconic personalities, Michele Reis, a special guest at today’s press conference who was presented with the ceremonial first ticket for the event this afternoon.
